On this past Sunday, the world lost a great band director – something this world already has too few of. At age 52, Richard Lorenzen passed away due to heart complications at his desk at Murrieta Valley High School this past Sunday evening. Despite having a family history of heart problems, the loss of this teacher and mentor has still come at a far too young of age.
It’s a vast understatement to say that he will be missed by his family, friends, and thousands of students who he has been a teacher, role model, and friend to over the 27 years he has been involved with music education. Just the sheer amount of messages left on his Facebook page, the numerous news articles written about the loss and the comments on how he would be missed and the impact he had is astounding. The amount of students he has been in contact with is enormous considering a few hundred each year for 27 years.
It just goes to show how fragile life is and how the people you think will always be there, can suddenly be taken away without a hint of warning.
It’s comforting to know that he passed away in the setting that he enjoyed most, still being able to do what he loved to do until the very end.
“We have been changed, for good.”
